The Chairman of Flutterwaves, Mr. Tunde Lemo, has disclosed that he personally directed the suspension of the fintech firm’s payment platform used for fund generation by #ENDSARS protesters.
In a report by ThisDay newspaper, Mr. Lemo, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said the decision was taken to prevent illicit flow of fund through the payment channel. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2020/10/13/endsars-i-ordered-closure-of-flutterwaves-payment-system-says-lemo/
“I was the one that instructed them to shut down their system yesterday when the bad guys were moving money through them,” Lemo was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
The explanation is coming against the background of reports that the account of the fintech firm was frozen.
The account, alongside that of Feminist Coalition, was used to donate and generate funds for the #EndSARS protesters.
As of Tuesday, a total of N16,706, 635.9 had been donated into the account, according to a post on Flutterwaves’ official Twitter handle.
The organisers of the protest have been using the donations to fund medical supplies, food, drinks, legal aids, and others to sustain the protest.
There have been earlier reports that the accounts were frozen based on pressure from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
